How to Choose the Right Sleeping Pillow


You have undoubtedly heard about the importance of choosing a comfortable mattress for a restful night’s sleep, but it is equally important to select the right type of sleeping pillow. Otherwise, you may be prone to headaches, neck pain, and numbness in the arms. But do you know how to choose the best pillow for sleeping? The answer depends largely on your sleeping position, as explained below.


Sleeping on Your Back


If you sleep on your back, it is recommended to use a thin pillow that cradles the neck and provides proper support. One of the best options is a memory foam pillow, which gets its name from its ability to conform to the shape of the head and neck. A water pillow is also a good choice, as it offers adequate support for both the head and neck. In addition, placing a pillow under the knees is recommended to reduce pressure on the lower back.


Sleeping on Your Stomach


In this case, you should use a very thin pillow—or no pillow at all. Sleeping on your stomach places significant pressure on the lower back, so it is better to try sleeping on your side while hugging a pillow if you prefer the feeling of something supporting your abdomen.

Side sleepers should choose a firm and higher pillow to help fill the space between the ear and the shoulder. It is also recommended to place a pillow between the knees to achieve better spinal alignment.


Types of Sleeping Pillows


There are several types of pillows available. Down pillows allow you to adjust the filling to your preference. When Should You Replace Your Pillow?


If you fold your pillow in half and it does not return to its original shape, it may be time to replace it. In general, pillows should be replaced every 18 months or so, as they often become a breeding ground for bacteria and allergens such as mold, dead skin cells, and dust mites. Pillow covers also play an important role in extending the life of your pillow.
